say whaaat?

europeans just do it better:

While sending cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts is traditional in the UK, Valentine’s Day has various regional customs. In Norfolk, a character called ‘Jack’ Valentine knocks on the rear door of houses leaving sweets and presents for children. Although he was leaving treats, many children were scared of this mystical person. In Wales, many people celebrate Dydd Santes Dwynwen (St Dwynwen’s Day) on January 25 instead of (or as well as) Valentine’s Day. The day commemorates St Dwynwen, the patron saint of Welsh lovers. In France, a traditionally Catholic country, Valentine’s Day is known simply as “Saint Valentin”, and is celebrated in much the same way as other western countries. In Spain Valentine’s Day is known as “San Valentín” and is celebrated the same way as in the UK, although in Catalonia it is largely superseded by similar festivities of rose and/or book giving on La Diada de Sant Jordi (Saint George’s Day). In Portugal it is more commonly referred to as “Dia dos Namorados” (Boy/Girlfriend’s Day).

In Denmark and Norway, Valentine’s Day (14 Feb) is known as Valentinsdag. It is not celebrated to a large extent, but many people take time to eat a romantic dinner with their partner, to send a card to a secret love or give a red rose to their loved one. In Sweden it is called Alla hjärtans dag (“All Hearts’ Day”) and was launched in the 1960s by the flower industry’s commercial interests, and due to the influence of American culture. It is not an official holiday, but its celebration is recognized and sales of cosmetics and flowers for this holiday are only exceeded by those for Mother’s Day.

In Finland Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates into “Friend’s day”. As the name indicates, this day is more about remembering all your friends, not only your loved ones. In Estonia Valentine’s Day is called Sõbrapäev, which has the same meaning.

In Slovenia, a proverb says that “St Valentine brings the keys of roots,” so on February 14, plants and flowers start to grow. Valentine’s Day has been celebrated as the day when the first work in the vineyards and in the fields commences. It is also said that birds propose to each other or marry on that day. Nevertheless, it has only recently been celebrated as the day of love. The day of love is traditionally March 12, the Saint Gregory’s day. Another proverb says “Valentin – prvi spomladin” (“Valentine — first saint of spring”), as in some places (especially White Carniola) Saint Valentine marks the beginning of spring.

In Romania, the traditional holiday for lovers is Dragobete, which is celebrated on February 24. It is named after a character from Romanian folklore who was supposed to be the son of Baba Dochia. Part of his name is the word drag (“dear”), which can also be found in the word dragoste (“love”). In recent years, Romania has also started celebrating Valentine’s Day, despite already having Dragobete as a traditional holiday. This has drawn backlash from many groups, reputable persons and institutions[36] but also nationalist organizations like Noua Dreaptǎ, who condemn Valentine’s Day for being superficial, commercialist and imported Western kitsch.

Valentine’s Day is called Sevgililer Günü in Turkey, which translates into “Sweethearts’ Day”.

According to Jewish tradition the 15th day of the month of Av – Tu B’Av (usually late August) is the festival of love. In ancient times girls would wear white dresses and dance in the vineyards, where the boys would be waiting for them (Mishna Taanith end of Chapter 4). In modern Israeli culture this is a popular day to pronounce love, propose marriage and give gifts like cards or flowers.

happy valentines day.

wild beetle cat juice.

alot has happened this week.
snow storms blanked cities white (and shut down some), earthquakes shook the earth so hard that some lady in a high rise in chicago claimed she felt it (liar…media whore), our trusty cta took a shit on our faces once again and apparently cut funding for cleaning the bus’ and trains because i want to vomit everytime i step aboard and am overwhelmed by the whiff of piss and feces devastating my nose and lee mcqueen (alexander mcqueen) passed on to the next life. god save mcqueen.

the biggest tragedy though is that my cat, the geeze, has been in the suburbs for over a week now and i miss his weirdo face 😦 sometimes i forget he’s not around and do that weird whistle and anticipate him jumping out from under the couch and we play for a second or two before he walks away like an asshole. i love that asshole though and it dawned upon me that because of that asshole i visited liz’s pet shop on western and chicago a few months ago and have been going ever since.

there’s not really a description of the shop because their website is under construction and i’m assuming it has been for quite sometime now. what i do appreciate about this business that it’s independent and they actually give a shit about your pet. maybe a little too much at times, i mean, the first time i went there i was greeted by the sweet sounds of liz telling me that my cat’s going to get diabetes and kidney failure because i feed him fancy feast (which he loves) and that i should slap my dad for buying him a 9lives jumbo bag of dry food. that obviously got me listening so i eyed the selection of cat food for my furry little friend. the dog food selection is just as broad, but i didn’t check it out for too long since i don’t own one. apparently most of the foods are organic and don’t contain bi-products, but that’s always debatable. the prices were a little above average, but that’s what you should expect for quality food. i mean, why complain about a $1.50 can of cat food when you spend $9.75 on a pack of parliament lights? it’s a top quality shop and the employees/owners there are extremely helpful. the hours are a little tricky, but don’t worry, i have that covered for you because i’m a nice guy. it’s not hard to find at all and it’s way better than driving to that demonic dominics with all the yuppie asshole scum fighting for those 15 min. spots and alot closer than petco, which is just depressing to walk into. so support your local businesses, your pets will appreciate it!!!

M.I. Loki – Life
not sure who directed it. the concept is clever…pretty literal to the title, but overall a win.
interpretation wise…i’m never good at that shit. uh, it’s like life you know? what confuses me is the ladder part of the video when marriage, children, spouse death is involved. was this what could’ve been because this kid died being a junkie? help me out here…what do you get out of it?

it’s like, uh, where do you want to be taken…

my apologies for not posting over the weekend. acquiring a new roommate meant acquiring an extra bit of spending money so that spending money was obviously put towards a luxurious jetblue flight to good old new yolk city. i say yolk because that city has some fantastic brunch. it was ridiculously cold, but it was grrreat to catch up with my mates and experience one of the greatest dj’s (in my opinion) for the 5th time in my life (plaslaiko never gets old). i even saw that chick from flight of the conchords! anyways, it’s good to be back in good old purgatory again. there’s only so many yankees new era caps, air jordans and nike hi-top everything i can take in a weekend.

big respect on mostly everyone’s support for new orleans last night. chicagoins really do have large, warm, gooey hearts for humans that survive some sort of tragedy and overcome the impossible. if i had more money, i would’ve done more hammisons out of respect, but there’s no need to be some sort of lame brain lush. i don’t even have any interest in american football, but i was pretty happy that they won the super bowl. wonder if the conservative obama haters out there are going to call the game fixed because he stated in his interview last night that he wanted them to win (since the colts beat his bears and they’re already favored…good man, good man)? would be pretty funny if that was brought up, lets hope it doesn’t and the debaters out there just talk shit about the shitty commercials aired.

moving on. ninja tune strikes the empty bottle once again…and for a FREE show!

king cannibal headlines with a dj set, but the openers are some of chicago’s finest.

here’s the ninja tune bio:

Art school dropout ZILLA (government name Dylan Richards) began working on his own brand of super-evolved mixes towards the latter end of the nineties as a reaction to the glut of uninspiring mix compilations that had began to flood the industry. The first salvo against conformity was A Friendly Game of Chess , a self-funded, hand-sprayed, highly under-the-counter mix project with Lex Records DJ and friend Buddy Peace. The highly stylised conceptual expression of work that combined a rich fusion of textures together with strong themes and motifs began to ignite more than their own imaginations, selling out in just 48 hours and earning high praise on a global scale.

A Friendly Game Of Chess was swiftly followed by solo mixtape strike One Foot In The Fire, One Fist In The Air which earned numerous comparisions to Coldcuts 70 Minutes Of Madness’. Comprised of almost 100 tracks from Autechre to Britney Spears, interviews and spoken word interludes, the CD sold-out in a day, attracted attention from all corners and ended up in many a Best of 2004 list. Among those with their ears to the ground were Trash supremo Erol Alkan, notorious London promoters Wheels Instead of Hooves and the heads of both Ninja Tune and Warp Records.

After 2 appearances on the legendary Solid Steel radio show, the honour of being the first unsigned act to play at Strictly Kev & D.Ks Solid Steel clubnight, 4 sets with Buddy Peace at Dedbeat 04 in the course of one weekend and a number of European dates, Warp Records stepped in and invited Buddy Peace & ZILLA to compile a retrospective of the label. Released late September 2004 as part of the ‘WARP VISION The Videos’ DVD, the mix entitled ‘Watch And Repeat Play’ was a startlingly original tour de force, over 70 minutes the two DJs re-worked and re-wired the label’s back catalogue, twisting the already twisted into sonic maelstrom.

The Warp Vision Audio Visual / Resfest Tour followed, with appearances alongside artists such as Plaid, Chris Cunningham, Seiji, Mike Paradinas and Funkstorung and invitations to play at the Glade Festival, Trash, The Warp Summer Ball and The Poke Xmas Rave. It was these shows and the experience of playing live that inspired ZILLAs latest mix Grinted Teeth & Brawlsville , a year in the making, it was a more uptempo and aggressive yet challenging body of work that manages to find the link between party starting crunk of Lil’ Jon and the dancefloor destroying sonics of The Aphex Twin.

Once again the great and the good were suitably impressed with praise coming from the likes of Kid 606, Knifehandchop and, again, Erol Alkan. The success of Grinted Teeth and ‘ZILLA’s growing reputation led to Domino Records inviting him to remix the final single from Test-Icicles, ‘Biggest Mistake’, a remix which has been rapturously received by everyone from Laurent Garnier to Lo Recordings Jon Tye who went on to release ‘ZILLA’s remix of The Chap’s ‘Premier At Last’. This was quickly followed by ‘ZILLA’ and Autechre remixes of Unique 3 ‘s The Theme (Fat! Records), .

2006 saw ‘ZILLA’ going back the lab and perfecting his twisted new sound, an industrial take on dancehall, dubstep & drum n bass. Demos and material started to leak out and with tunes receiving massive support from Amon Tobin (Ninja Tune,) Kid 606, Combat Recordings and Rag And Bone Records. ‘ZILLA’ was invited to record material for Kid 606’s Shockout label, Rag & Bone Records, Combat Records and Uncharted Audio and put together remixes for Black Grass and New Flesh.

2008 looks set to be a year of true Cannibal Carnage due to massive radio support in the form of the recent BBC Radio 1 Scorn Vs King Cannibal Soundclash Special and Aragami Style receiving HEAVY rotation on Mary Anne Hobb’s Experimental show , planned collaberations with Bong-Ra, remixes for The Qemists ft Wiley, Ghislain Poirier, Scorn and Ebola his EP on Bong Ra’s Kriss Records and appearances at numerous festivals all squeezed around the recording schedule for King Cannibal’s debut LP for his proud new home, Ninja Tune.

impressive to say the least. opening up are searchl1te featuring entro, quadratic label and phaded. i know that phaded is the smartbar dubstep resident dj so if you can’t take heavy bass…don’t go to this place. on the other hand, seems like everyone and their cool young mothers are into dubstep so i might advise showing up on time.

do i really need to give you the address for the empty bottle? it’s been posted like 3 times already.

uh yea, so last but not least…i’m holding back my thoughts about this photo for maybe another day, or over a beer. i prefer the ladder:

stand up tawl.

dizzee rasc touchin down on the hardships of modern day life.
typically i don’t take most of his songs seriously, i mean, how can you considering anything that comes out of his mouth sounds like speedy gonzales singing through a muffler on steroids. the beats are mean and i guess innovating for the time. his newish release tongue and cheek offers a variety of genres along with his distinctive vocals. some big name producers on this one, but the biggest is shy fx. i’ve been a long time fan of shy fx’s music because he is a big boy in the drum and bass scene, saw him a few times at sonotheque (rip) and drool over any release on digital soundboy. top notch, these two together leave me no choice but to play this song on repeat at least 5 times in a row. perfect for the shitty weather and our non improving economic crisis. this has nothing to do with the area of chicago, but it definitely corresponds to the foreclosed properties on my and your street.

alas! we’re on that mid week tweak shiiiiiiiit.
the only way to calm them nerves is to obviously get a drink. it’s crummy out so why bother commuting anywhere other than to archies iowa rockwell tavern? pete (the bartender and friend of the world) has decided to whip together a nice little party as well!

without further ado, i give you the description:

Wednesday night, Archie’s Bar is kicking off February (the month of silly love-based events) with an impromptu queer night – Looking towards making it a recurring monthly event (first Wednesday of every month). No attitudes. No Madonna. No Cher. Just a fun cheap hangout for the neighborhood boys & girls and their funtastic friends. Doesn’t matter what your orientation is… orient yourself to the corner of Iowa & Rockwell. Featuring camp and cult movies on the big screen and will offer patrons the opportunity to plug in their mp3 player to the sound system.

$3 Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale (February… heart-themed beer… get it… get it?) and the usual $5 Hammeson Combo (all month)

so tell your friends with any orientation to come on out and support!
